Passion for aviation drives Niann Tsyr. Since 2016, she has been building drones and competing in the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition to further her skills. She thus took up the DSO Diploma Scholarship to pursue a diploma in Aerospace Electronics at Singapore Polytechnic.
We spoke with her to learn more about what she has been up to and her crazy love for drones.
1. Share with us what made you want to take up the scholarship.
I have always been interested in aviation. This scholarship offers me unique opportunities to explore the field beyond the typical polytechnic environment. It has led to various experiences that I believe will set me up early for a fulfilling career as an aviation expert in the defence technology industry.
2. When and how did you get to learn about the scholarship?
I came to know about DSO during the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition in 2018. They co-hosted the competition and I was really impressed with the event. My curiosity led me to their website and I was delighted to find that they offer a dedicated scholarship for diploma students.
3. Did you receive any support during your scholarship period?
The financial support which covers my tuition fees and living allowance enabled me to focus on my studies, holistic development and my drone racing hobby. The scholarship also provides an opportunity for a meaningful internship at DSO, which will allow me to work on real-world projects that will contribute to the nation’s defence.
4. What unique possibilities are there for DSO Diploma Scholars?
I have been given access to in-house sharing events and internship opportunities that are not open to the general public. Such events are interesting and informative, providing fresh and exciting perspectives that I will cherish for a long time to come.
5. What would you say to convince someone to apply for the DSO Diploma Scholarship?
This is a rare opportunity to translate what you learn in school into real-world projects with guidance from a friendly and knowledgeable mentor. If you are passionate about science and engineering, you will find the DSO Diploma Scholarship incredibly fulfilling.
6. We heard that you’re starting your internship with us soon! What are you looking forward to learning?
I’m looking forward to learning more about drone swarming, along with how the hardware of autonomous and semi-autonomous drones are selected to complement the software!
